Creative, Attachment-Focused Therapy for Couples, Families and Individuals

A couple reconnecting. Couple's therapy helped.

Couple’s Therapy

When you fight with the person you love the most, it might seem from the outside that you’re upset about something relatively small. However, the intensity of emotion betrays the truth: you’re fighting for the most important parts of your life: love, respect, connection, acceptance and safety.

Conversely, when your partner is upset with you, you may shut down and seem disinterested, but that isn’t actually true. You’re afraid of judgment and being attacked, so you defend and protect yourself in order to keep the relationship together. You’re fighting for safety and waiting out the storm.

I use Emotionally-Focused Couple’s Therapy (EFCT) to help you reconnect with your partner, recover from trauma, or weather difficult times. Instead of focusing on the “small stuff,” EFCT gets to the heart of the matter. In EFCT, we explore these patterns in the safest, bravest way, so that you can have the safe, expansive, loving relationship that you’ve always wanted.

Family Therapy

Maybe your teenager is engaging in behavior that is scary, or you just can’t reach them. Or perhaps you’re an adult who hopes that they can finally work out old problems with your parents, or your siblings. Whomever the players are, you’ve been trying to connect with these people for a long time, and it’s not working. Family therapy can help to create the safety necessary to reconnect after tragedy or major change.

I use a variety of therapy techniques to help families to have intimate, vulnerable, helpful conversations. Whether your family tends to get loud, or people withdraw from one another and stop talking, therapy can help.

Regardless of life stage, all parents want to provide safety and caring for their children, so if they’re blocked, it’s as painful for the parent as it is for the child. I use Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) to help parents to express love and caring for their children in a clear way.

Similarly, all children, regardless of age or life stage, want to receive care, acceptance, and safety from their parents. If they repeatedly are rejected or blocked in their attempts to connect, kids will fight harder for connection or even stop trying and withdraw. EFFT creates the safety required for children to reach for their parents and accept the care that they want to give.

Individual Therapy

Are you feeling stuck? You keep hearing about all this “potential” that you’re supposed to have, but you keep hitting brick walls. You know that inside, you’re creative and that you have a lot to offer, but it’s really scary to put it all out there. Maybe you’re depressed, anxious, and/or dealing with symptoms of trauma. If that’s the case, therapy could help.

I use a variety of therapy techniques to help you see that, in fact, you’re not stuck.

I might use Narrative Therapy techniques to help you to get to know and respect your parts, and then put them to work in the service of your dreams.

You might benefit from Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) which can help you to heal from shame and self-doubt.

If you’ve got PTSD, I’m going to encourage you to try Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), which can help you to truly understand your trauma, and who you are in the wake of it.
